Wicked and Weird

WEIRD HALLOWEEN HANDOUTS

In a survey of parents, here are the weirdest Halloween handouts:

Animal Food — Doggie bones and cat treats?

Inappropriate Literature — Age-appropriate comic books are acceptable, but Playboy magazines and religious pamphlets  spoil the fun of Halloween.

Random Foodstuff — Besides apples, parents in the survey noted that their kids had received canned vegetables, potatoes, bulbs of garlic and frozen dinners.

Toiletries — Dentists commonly give out toothbrushes, but other personal hygiene frequent finds included sample-sized soaps, shampoo, conditioner and even band-aids.

Odds ‘n Ends — Free trial software CDs, golf balls, batteries, and packs of pushpins, bobby pins, staples and paper clips.

Out of Season Candy — Halloween candy is supposed to be gross — fake ear wax, boogers, scabs, and even gooey eyeballs are all fair game. But what’s really gross is the obviously leftover candy from a way-past holiday, like old chocolate Easter eggs and Christmas candy canes.

Marketing Material — Cards and coupons for everything from babysitting and bowling to roof repair and real estate have been discovered among the sweeter scores.

Simple Rules for Eating Smarter

SIMPLE RULES FOR EATING SMARTER AND HEALTHIER

Want to eat smarter and healthier? Here are a few simple, common-sense rules that make it easy to make healthy food choices. (These come from MSNBC.)

• If you can’t grow it, don’t eat it. Carrots obviously come from the ground, and milk comes from cows. Where do blueberry muffins come from? If your best guess is “aisle 6,” pass ’em up! When foods are heavily-processed, they have fewer nutrients, antioxidants and fiber. Even when a chemist adds them back after processing, it’s still not as healthy as whole foods you can actually identify.

• Also: Read the back of the box first. According to registered dieticians, the front is all advertising. If you want the facts, look at the back. She also points out that the more ingredients there are, the more artificial ingredients were mixed in during processing.

• The crunchier the better. Snacks that offer a big, satisfying crunch keep your mouth busy longer. The more you chew, the slower you eat, which means your body has more time to register fullness. We’re talking crunchy apples, celery, carrots, and nuts, not potato chips.

• If it’s not around, you can’t eat it. Say you’re on the sofa, watching Dancing with the Stars and you get an urge for Cheetos. If you just have to walk to the kitchen, you’re more likely to grab a bag and attack it. However, if you have to put on your shoes, find your keys and drive to 7-11 — and miss part of your show — laziness will win out over the Cheetos.

• You don’t have to finish every bite. We’re conditioned to think that if we don’t eat everything on our plate, we’re being wasteful. However, if you keep munching after you’re already full, you’re just packing on the pounds. Bottom line: If there’s enough left over for lunch tomorrow, put it in the fridge.  Otherwise, toss it in the trash.

It’s Thursday Morning!

Also on this mornings show, we’ll salute National Nut Day:

When : Always October 22nd

National Nut Day is today. It’s a little kooky and crazy if you ask me.

One can go a little bit batty contemplating the meaning of this day. Our research came up empty on information about this day. So, we can’t be certain as to the meaning of this very nutty day. There are two very obvious possibilities:

1. This day honors (???) all of the nutty people in the world. It gives recognition to all the kooks, loony birds and daffy people in your life. Show them you care today.

2. This day celebrates nutritious and healthy nuts (food) of all kinds. Celebrate today by eating lots of nuts, either as a snack, or in baked goods.  May we suggest Chocolate Almond Ice Cream?

Of course it is always possible that this day celebrates the “Nut” that screws onto a bolt for fastening things.

A couple of nutty facts:

  • Peanuts are not really nuts. They are Legumes, a member of the “Pea” family.
  • The center of seeds, like pumpkins and squash, is called a “nut”.

We’ll also get you ready for a Mother Lode Weekend, make sure you have the traffic you need and play lot’s of great country music!

Have a great Mother Lode Day!
