THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT TIME

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday

The average U.S. city commuter loses 38 hours a year to traffic delays.

Wonder why you have to set your clock ahead in March? Daylight Saving Time began as a joke by Benjamin Franklin, who proposed waking people earlier on bright summer mornings so they might work more during the day and thus save candles. It was introduced in the U.K. in 1917 and then spread around the world.

The Department of Energy estimates that electricity demand drops by 0.5 percent during Daylight Saving Time, saving the equivalent of nearly 3 million barrels of oil.

By observing how quickly bank tellers made change, pedestrians walked, and postal clerks spoke, psychologists determined that the three fastest-paced U.S. cities are Boston, Buffalo, and New York. The three slowest? Shreveport, Sacramento, and L.A.

One second used to be defined as one-86-thousand-four-hundreth the length of a day. However, Earth’s rotation isn’t perfectly reliable. Tidal friction from the sun and moon slows our planet and increases the length of a day by 3 milliseconds per century.

Weather also changes the day. During El Niño events, strong winds can slow Earth’s rotation by a fraction of a millisecond every 24 hours.

In 1972 a network of atomic clocks in more than 50 countries was made the final authority on time, so accurate that it takes 31.7 million years to lose about one second. To keep this time in sync with Earth’s slowing rotation, a “leap second” must be added every few years, most recently this past New Year’s Eve.

The world’s most accurate clock, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Colorado, measures vibrations of a single atom of mercury. In a billion years it will not lose one second.

Until the 1800s, every village lived in its own little time zone, with clocks synchronized to the local solar noon. This caused havoc with the advent of trains and timetables. For a while watches were made that could tell both local time and “railway time.” On November 18, 1883, American railway companies forced the national adoption of standardized time zones.

Einstein showed that gravity makes time run more slowly. Thus airplane passengers, flying where Earth’s pull is weaker, age a few extra nanoseconds each flight.

There may be an end of time. Three Spanish scientists posit that the observed acceleration of the expanding cosmos is an illusion caused by the slowing of time. According to their math, time may eventually stop, at which point everything will come to a standstill.

SNUGGIE WORLD RECORD _ Fans attending Friday’s Cavaliers game against Detroit set a Guinness Book of World Record for the “largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets” while wearing custom-designed Cavs Snuggies before the game. All fans in attendance had a Snuggie placed on their seats prior to the game. During a timeout in the first quarter, fans were asked to wear the wine-colored blankets with arms for five minutes as a clock on the scoreboard counted down. Most everyone complied — except for one fan wearing a Celtics jersey and another who thought ahead and brought a Pistons Snuggie. The rest of the sellout crowd of 20,562 turned the arena into a sea of red blankets. A Guinness World Records official was on hand to witness the momentous occasion. Oh, and the video is so exciting.

Brad’s American Saturday Night Tour made its final stop on the tour at the Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, SC last night and on the final note of the encore finale (“Alcohol”), Brad fell on stage – he bounced back up, finished the show and thanked the audience and told them good-bye. Once he left the stage he was transported to the local hospital via ambulance to be checked out – all is well, only badly bruised. Brad was discharged from the hospital and is on his way home to Nashville.

Congratulations to this week’s KKBN Goodie Award Winner, CINDY ZELINSKI! Here’s the Nomination letter

I feel the goody award should go to my hard working friend, Cindy Zelinsky. She owns Papa’s New Roost, she just opened Happy Hour Hair Salon, She runs Lazy Resort and on top of all of that, she is going to school at SH Cosmetology. She helps the school out with programs around the community. Also, she is beautiful mother to her daughter, Parkyre (Parker). She works her tail off day in and day out and on top of all that, she has the most beautiful heart in the world! She deserves more, but I would like to honor her for one week! She is a great, hard working person.

Thank you,
Lisa

If you’d like to nominate someone for the KKBN Goodie award, send us your nomination letter today by going to our contact page and sending us your email to Big Joe! The Goodie is brought to each week by JS West Ace Hardware

Here is some interesting information about the benefits of frozen food.

The subject of “fresh” vs. “frozen” has caused a few arguments but the facts remain solid, freezing is the best known means of food preservation. Some of the advantages of frozen food include: Less waste, convenience and cost. Freezing preserves the nutritional value, freshness, flavor and color of foods. Unless you are pulling it from your garden or purchasing it at a local farmers market, it’s hard to find better nutritional value. You might say that frozen is fresher than “fresh.” Research shows that frozen products often contain more nutrients than fresh foods. That’s because produce destined for your grocery store is harvested at the height of ripeness and nutrient value. It is rushed to nearby freezing plants for immediate processing which preserves the nutrient content. Fresh fruits and vegetables are often gathered in an immature or “unripened” state and allowed to ripen “off the vine” this can rob the produce of it’s nutrient value. Further, because “fresh” products are frequently transported long distances and stored in warehouses before they are placed on your grocery or supermarket shelves, they have often lost nutrients and vitamins. Nutrient depletion even continues while produce is stored in your refrigerator. Unless vegetables and fruits are truly “garden fresh,” frozen is a better buy nutritionally.

Scientists at the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation analyzed 51 different frozen foods regularly found in grocery stores and supermarkets. Their research proved that foods retain their nutritional value during freezing. Substantial and highly beneficial amounts of no less than 21 essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients were found in these products. Freezing, per se, does not injure vitamins. Air exposure is much more destructive, particularly to volatile nutrients such as vitamin C and thiamine.

If you’re like me sometimes you put stuff in your freezer and forget to cook it. Is it still safe to eat?

How long will frozen food keep?

Frozen dinners — three to four months

Ground beef and turkey — three months

Bacon, unopened — one month

Roasts — six to twelve months

Whole fish — five to six months

Fish fillets — four to five months

Shellfish — four to six months

Whole chicken or turkey — twelve months

Chicken or turkey pieces — nine months

Cooked poultry — four months

We just brought in this little one from our ranch on Saturday. This is “Bridgette” and my son Cody. Bridgette is a as of today, Monday, 5 days old and a black Angus heifer. Her mom had mastitis and couldn’t nurse her, so my son and I have taken her in to our backyard to bottle feed her 3 times a day. So far she is doing well, and we are giving her electrolytes and scour tablets to help her along this week. Today she ran around the backyard with Cody and laid out and soaked up some Vitamin E in the sun. If we get her along to the end of the week she is good to go for a new replacement heifer at our ranch when it’s time to breed her.

Cody wanted to call her “Big Joe” I told him it’s a girl so he said “Bridgette!”
